4th Edition...meh

It's a good time to talk about D&D's alignment. If your not aware, folks around the world are tore up about Will Smith's recent comments about Hitler. I don't know the exact quote but it was something along the lines of, "I don't think Hitler got up each day and said, "I am going to do very evil things today." No I think he got up each day thinking he was doing good." Bam that's Lawful evil; At least the way I think of it. Alignment gets all it's power from the fact that any real life situation can be sumed up by an alignment. However, the changing of the system has me worried. More and more each day folks are putting morale decisions into simple, "Good" and "Evil" categories. Nothing will ever be that simple, no matter how hard they try to force it.

That got me thinking about my own alignment. I guess the young man beneath the crown is neutral good. In fact I think most Americans fit that alignment. I would like to be chaotic. Life would be far more interesting. The thing about America though, is we are an extremely lawful nation. There just is not a lot of room for chaotic individuals. Kind of ironic being that we call ourselves "Home of the Brave, land of the free." Whats worse is neutral alignments change with the wind. A real 50/50 split of Law and chaos. Makes folks primed for manipulation. Simplifying alignment in 4th edition in my mind is a subtle attempt to dumb down a smart game. And thats just too damn bad!

Yeah well according to our government it's pretty simple - if the USA does it that's good, if anyone else does it that's evil.

I'm pretty sure I'm chaotic good myself, but I definitely try to keep a lid on my chaotic nature as I'm trying to stay out of the camps for a while longer yet.
